Feedback from others:
The comments I received from the audience and my teacher are as following:
I have made professional sounding compositions that fit very well with the minimalist electronica genre.
The tracks are well mixed and filled the room well.
The tempo of my tracks were quite fast with busy rhythms which the audience members liked, and it was interesting to listen to between quite slow performances on stage.
I could have used different synth sounds between compositions to create more of a varied.
I could have used different keys for my compositions by learning how to use the transpose feature of the DAW.
I could have used the 'Circle of 5ths' to modulate my compositions to the dominant key, e.g. In C Major I could have gone to G major.
How this feedback helped with my evaluation of my compositions:
It was interesting to note that the fast rhythm was popular with the audience as well as the mixing and mastering on them. They still needed a little more variation such as key shifts which was suggested to me but the other elements worked well.
Teacher feedback: Radley, I know you had a bit of a rocky start with software issues etc. but you have done well to create a solid start to a song that clearly mirrors the style in which you are trying to compose. Also, Logic Studio is a complex piece of software, so you have done well to tackle it intuitively. One of the most difficult things to do when it comes to composing in an EDM style is to create a simple yet effective melody, which you have achieved here. Another challenge of this style is to maintain the repetitive quality (as a key characteristic of dance music) yet keep the interest by subtly changing other elements - you have managed to do this so far, but it will become increasingly difficult as the song increases in length. You will, I'm sure, rise to the challenge however! The key to this style is layering - make sure you layer sections effectively to keep the interest and the key EDM characteristics. Perhaps vary the melody very slightly and experiment with counter melodies as the song goes on. Great start so far.
ReplyDeletePeer feedback:
- I liked it because it used a contrast between the deep and heavy drum beat and the quiet and smooth section - you also created a clever melody.
- This piece was excellently put together and had a nice melody that repeated throughout.
- This song matches the style well.
- It was a great piece to listen to and had a really good beat to it.
- Some good melodies and flowed very well. Could be improved by adding more instruments.
- I liked the melody and overall sound. To improve you could make it a bit more upbeat?
- It was clearly well thought through. To improve it could improve a bass drop at some point.
- This is a different type of music, I haven't heard anything like it before - but I really liked this composition.
- Catchy rhythm, went very well with the drum beat.
- A lot of repetition but I thought the beats were really good.
